History and origins
A fact-checked account of where this visual language came from, with links to the references used.
- Period
- Mid-1970s–1980s, with continuing independent-print influence
- Origin
- Punk scenes in New York, London, and other cities
Punk zines arose as cheap, fast, participant-made media alongside punk music in the mid-1970s. Photocopying, typewriters, ransom-note lettering, hand marks, collage, and deliberately rough reproduction let fans document scenes outside established publishing; later alternative magazines, grunge, and web anti-design retained that do-it-yourself visual politics.

Design principles and implementation
Use these principles to write a focused AI UI design prompt instead of asking for a vague visual treatment.
Color direction
Work in high-contrast black and white with urgent red or fluorescent marker accents, preserving visible toner and paper variation. In a daisyUI theme, use urgent red for `primary`, fluorescent marker yellow or green for `secondary`, and set `base-100`, `base-200`, and `base-300` to dirty white, newsprint gray, and darker toner gray.
Imagery direction
Use direct-flash band or street photography, photocopied portraits, protest ephemera, safety pins, tape, stamps, and hand-cut graphics.
Content density
Embrace dense visual layering and compressed statements, but separate dates, venues, prices, and actions into unmistakable blocks.
Motion direction
Use cut-and-paste entrances, marker scribbles, jittered photocopy frames, stamp impacts, and fast rough wipes tied to content changes.
Shape language
Favor torn paper, taped corners, ransom-note blocks, rough stars, stencil marks, and thick scratched dividers. In daisyUI themes, set the `--radius-*` variables to `0` or `0.25rem`.
Typography rules
Mix marker, stencil, ransom-note, and condensed display lettering for slogans, setting logistics and body copy in a hard-working mono or grotesque.
